Tailoring & Embroidery Training Programme - Nizamuddinrenewal

The training centre for tailoring and embroidery in the Basti has been functional since May 2008. It imparts basic and/or advanced training in traditional hand embroidery (aari & zardozi), machine embroidery and tailoring. As of now, the centre has trained or upgraded existing skills of more than 100 adolescents and women from the Basti.

Embroidery and Tailoring courses are now certified by the Jan Shiksha Sansthan (JSS), Ministry of Human Resources, Government of India. A new curriculum is being designed for the certificate courses, to be replicated in other JSS centres across the country.

In addition to skill upgradation, the training module supplements professional course content with functional literacy teaching and life skill education. Through the centre, girl students can enrol in Class 10 and Bachelor of Arts programmes in National Open School and Jamia Milia University respectively.

Since the primary purpose of the initiative is income generation and financial independence, the students receive practical assistance to set up Self Help Groups and establish linkages for marketing their products. Samples of products made at the centre are shared with agencies and individuals for procurement of orders

Creating Opportunities & Empowering Communities

Livelihood opportunities in the Basti were found to be limited in scope and capacity with incomes mostly seasonal and dependent on tourists and pilgrims. Skill deficits were another cause for unemployment of younger residents. The vocational education
and training programmes aim at improved continuing education and employability Trained in skilled traditional crafts amongst youth.

Training for economic opportunities has been focussed on youth and women and has led to the setting up of several self help groups promoting home-based trades.
